Dear Sir,
There has been much fuss made over the last few days about a South Tyneside resident challenging the Second Tyne Tunnel proposal, supported by Legal Aid.
As Co-ordinator for the Tyne Crossings Alliance I have been deeply involved in the proposal, and the Inquiry, for many years. The investment of the public's money in pursuing this project against what we believe to be the interests of local residents and the Region is enormous. The TWPTA employed a team of London lawyers plus a QC and a Barrister for weeks at the Inquiry, and before, and since. We the Objectors gave our time, which has amounted to many months including attendance throughout the inquiry, for free.
Isn't it time that developers (private or public) realised that they can't run steamrollers (in this case a vastly increased number of cars, for which there isn't room on our streets) over the general public unchallenged?
Yours faithfully,
Paul Winch,
Co-ordinator,
Tyne Crossings Alliance.
