To The Editor, Shields Gazette, 30th May 2002.

Dear Sir,

Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) have placed their application to the Secretary of State for Transport, for the construction of a second Tyne road tunnel. They have finally proved to the people that they are supposed to represent that they are proceeding with their objective of encouraging car use, rather than devising realistic public transport alternatives.

If the application is successful, millions of pounds of taxpayers money will be poured into this hole to satisfy a short term desire to ensure that the motoring lobby is appeased, and a private consortium can profit from drivers.

Traffic will be drawn away from the dual carriageways of Newcastle, and dumped onto the streets of South Tyneside. The people of Jarrow, Boldon, Hedworth, Fellgate and Hebburn will feel the damaging repurcussions of this project.

They will watch their children suffer from the asthma brought on by the extra pollution. They will feel stressed by the noise and vibration the additional traffic will bring. They will see more pedestrian accidents in new rat runs.

If you don't want to see this nightmare future come to pass, then write a letter of objection to the Secretary of State for transport. Like Councillor Tom Hanson said, 'Letters do have an impact and are taken notice of.'

Make an impact and help stop this madness.
