Green Party Gives Tunnel Plan The Red Light The Tyne Crossings Alliance welcomes the motion passed unanimously at this weekend's national Green Party Conference opposing the construction of a new road tunnel under the River Tyne. The motion included the words: "The Green Party condemns the current plan by the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (TWPTA) to build a new road tunnel under the River Tyne. It does so mainly on the basis that a new tunnel would increase road traffic and car dependency". The motion ends: "The Green Party urges that the road tunnel scheme be dropped and the Metro (public transport) extension scheme be substituted if there is a proven need for greater access across the River. Conference requests that the Secretary of State call a full Public Inquiry into the current road tunnel proposal so that these matters may be fully aired in public". Anna-Marie Allan of the Alliance said: "It is very encouraging that a national political party has the will and ethical strength to oppose such a damaging and politically charged project".
