About Us

The Tyne Crossings Alliance is a group of organisations and concerned individuals opposed to the proposed construction of a second road tunnel under the River Tyne, North East England. See here for a list of our member groups.

Despite the Tyne and Wear PTA's success in convincing the Government to give them the go ahead to build the road tunnel, the Alliance will continue to endeavour to make the proposers of the tunnel scheme to see sense and investigate better, safer and more environmentally friendly transport solutions.

Our arguments against the tunnel can be seen in detail here.

Since then, the Alliance has widened its remit from the single Tyne Tunnel issue to include sustainable transport concerns in the Tyne area.

The same old-fashioned "roads first" mindset is still prevalent in our local and national planning circles. Councils in the region continue to support development which encourages the growth of car use, which is contrary to good environmental and social sustainability objectives.

The "more roads, more cars" ideology which currently drives development cannot continue without severe negative consequences. Growth in car use is impacts many areas: climate change, social exclusion and public health.

The Tyne Crossings Alliance will continue to challenge this outdated planning model, and encourage planners and policy makers to search for more sustainable and people-friendly transport and development solutions.
